Vacherot vs Van Assche Prediction: Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes 2026
Vacherot's ranking is the clearest separator against Van Assche, but the underdog's stronger return record offers a concrete route to an upset.
Valentin Vacherot faces Luca Van Assche in the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes round of 16. His higher established ranking is the clearest separator, with Court Shark's model giving him a 66% chance to win.
A quarterfinal place tests the ranking gap
At No. 14 in the rankings, Valentin Vacherot enters Lyon with a clearer advantage in established standing than in recent results. Luca Van Assche was ranked No. 45. That is the main separation. Recent winning records alone offer little reason to distinguish them, making their broader standing the stronger starting point for this hard-court preview.
Their round of 16 meeting at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes offers a quarterfinal place, with Vacherot defending his status as the higher ranked player. He had reached his career-best ranking, while Van Assche remained below his own peak. For Van Assche, the opportunity is specific: turn his latest win into a deeper run by beating an opponent whose recent results were no better than his.

Each dot is one of the ATP top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Valentin Vacherot is 32nd of 94; Luca Van Assche is 93rd of 94.

|---|---|---|
| Valentin Vacherot | 84.3% | 32nd of 94 |
| Luca Van Assche | 71.5% | 93rd of 94 |
| Field median | 81.7% | |
| Field best (Jannik Sinner) | 94.6% | 1st |
Equal recent records leave standing as the separator
Both players went 6-4 across their last 10 matches, and their recent hard-court records matched that same pattern. Form does not separate them. Those identical totals make the case for Vacherot a question of his broader standing and service record, rather than a higher recent winning rate.
Vacherot's service record supplies a narrower, practical reason to favor him beyond ranking: over the past year on hard courts, he held 84% of service games. Van Assche held 80%. That advantage suggests Vacherot may have more room to protect his own games and make Van Assche's return opportunities less frequent. The ranking gap remains the clearest overall distinction; the service figures give it a specific point of support on this surface.
Van Assche's return offers a route through
Van Assche's return record is the strongest challenge to that reading: he broke in 28% of hard-court return games over the same period. Vacherot broke in 17%. Returns could change the forecast. If Van Assche can translate that stronger return record into pressure on Vacherot's service games, the favorite's clearest on-court advantage becomes less secure.
There was also a difference in recent activity: Vacherot had gone nine days without a match, while Van Assche had played the previous day. That may favor Van Assche's immediate match readiness after his win over Clement Tabur in Lyon. They had never met, leaving no direct result to show whether Vacherot's serving advantage or Van Assche's returning advantage is more likely to prevail against this particular opponent.
The prediction
Court Shark's model favors Vacherot with a 66% win probability, while the market consensus gives him 63%. Both favor the same player. Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Vacherot, agreeing with the model's direction. The case for that agreement is his higher established standing and stronger service record, rather than a difference in recent win totals.
Court Shark's scoreline forecast makes a straight-sets Vacherot win the likeliest individual result, at 44%, while giving a deciding set a 38% chance. That points toward a win built around protecting serve, with Van Assche's stronger returning providing the clearest reason the match could extend.
The forecast's median total is 22 games. Its middle half of outcomes runs from 19 to 29 games. Van Assche's ability to convert his return advantage against Vacherot's serve is the most concrete test of the favorite's position.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
