Van Assche vs Tabur Prediction: Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes 2026
Tabur's busier schedule offers rhythm but less recovery. Van Assche's return record provides the stronger reason to favor him in Lyon.
Clement Tabur's busier schedule offers match practice but a shorter recovery window before the round of 32 at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes. Court Shark's model gives Luca Van Assche a 66% win probability, with his stronger return record supporting the pick.
Tabur arrives with more match practice
Four matches in the last 14 days gave Clement Tabur more recent competition than Luca Van Assche, who played once over that span. That recent record points to a preparation advantage, but it also leaves Tabur with less recovery before their meeting on hard courts in Lyon. The tradeoff is real. Match counts alone cannot establish whether he arrives tired or better prepared.
Tuesday's round of 32 at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes puts Van Assche's higher ranking against Tabur's more encouraging immediate results, with a place in the next round available. Van Assche was ranked No. 45, while Tabur stood at No. 158. Tabur entered on a two-match winning run; Van Assche had lost his last three. For Tabur, the task is to carry those recent wins into a tougher ranking matchup. For Van Assche, the opportunity is to turn a recovery break into a better start.
Recovery is the cost, rhythm is the benefit
Van Assche last played 12 days ago, while Tabur played the day before this match. The recovery advantage belongs to Van Assche, although his break also creates a reasonable concern about how quickly he settles into competitive play. Rest cuts both ways. Tabur has had less time away from match conditions, which may help him early even if the schedule becomes a burden later.
Tabur's latest results offer a more useful workload distinction than the match count alone: he needed a deciding set against Valentin Royer, then beat Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in straight sets. That shorter latest match makes the schedule less concerning than consecutive long matches would have been. My reading is that Tabur's activity can help at the start, while its potential cost grows if Van Assche extends the contest. Managing service games efficiently would help Tabur keep that cost down.

Tabur's serve could keep the workload manageable
Tabur held 83% of his service games on hard courts over the past year, compared with Van Assche's 80%. That gives him a concrete route to making the extra competition an asset: protect serve and limit the time spent recovering from difficult service games. His serve matters here. If that record carries into Lyon, Van Assche may have fewer opportunities to turn his greater rest into sustained pressure.
The return figures point the other way: Van Assche broke in 28% of return games, against Tabur's 22%. That is the clearest tennis reason to favor Van Assche beyond the schedule, because repeated pressure on Tabur's serve could make recovery between points more consequential. Neither player had faced the other before. Tabur's serving and Van Assche's early sharpness are the practical tests: comfortable holds help the underdog, while repeated extended service games make his workload more relevant.
The prediction
Court Shark's model favors Van Assche with a 66% win probability, against Tabur's 34%. Both favor the rested player. The market gives Van Assche a 59% chance, leaving a 7 percentage point gap between the model and market, with his return record supporting the stronger forecast.
Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Van Assche and agrees with the model. The stronger return record and longer recovery window support that choice, while Tabur's recent wins make a slow start from Van Assche particularly costly. I see the heavier schedule as a possible late cost, rather than an immediate disadvantage.
The forecast has a median total of 22 games. Its middle range runs from 18 to 28 games, allowing for a contest long enough to test whether Tabur's serving can spare him repeated difficult holds.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
