WTA Finals Set for Charlotte From 2027

Charlotte will host the WTA Finals from 2027 as the tour seeks stability for its season-ending championship.

Charlotte chosen as new host

Charlotte has been selected to stage the WTA Finals from 2027, bringing the season-ending championship to North Carolina on a three year agreement. The decision offers a defined home for an event that has moved repeatedly in recent seasons.

Stability has been scarce. The Finals had six hosts across seven years, and a planned ten-year stay in Shenzhen ended after only one edition, leaving Guadalajara, Fort Worth, Cancun and Riyadh to share hosting duties. Charlotte now gets a chance to establish a lasting identity for the event, which brings together the leading eight singles players and doubles teams of the season.

The WTA takes a larger role

The WTA will run the Finals itself in Charlotte, rather than simply retaining ownership while others handle the event. Chair Valerie Camillo said, "We are taking control of this event."

This year provides the bridge. The Finals will be played in Indian Wells before the Charlotte move begins, and Camillo described 2026 as a transition year while the organization prepares its new operating arrangement. The aim is greater consistency around the championship, which has also struggled at times to build strong crowds during its recent run of changing locations.

Riyadh agreement ends early

Riyadh had been scheduled to hold the Finals again in November, but its arrangement ended a year sooner than expected. The decision was linked in part to instability from the conflict involving the United States and Iran, as well as reduced interest from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The fund had also ended its support for LIV Golf, while the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters was another event affected earlier this year. Those developments set the context for the WTA's search for a different long-term base. Charlotte is the answer, with the governing body also moving its global headquarters there from St Petersburg, Florida.

A shorter schedule at Spectrum Centre

The Finals will be held at Spectrum Centre, the Charlotte Hornets' home arena, during a busy part of the basketball season. Scheduling pressure from the Hornets' home games means the tennis event will be shortened from eight days to five.

That change could reshape the competition. The WTA has begun discussing other formats with players, and if the round-robin stage remains, finalists would have to play on consecutive days. It is a demanding prospect. The details still need to be settled before 2027, but Charlotte's compact schedule will be central to the next version of the Finals.
