Chwalinska vs Kartal Prediction: Wuhan 2026 Final
Kartal's stronger hard-court service record separates two closely matched Wuhan finalists, though Chwalinska's return game gives her a clear route to winning.
Maja Chwalinska and Sonay Kartal meet in the Wuhan final, where Kartal's stronger hard-court service record is the clearest separator. Court Shark's model gives Kartal a narrow 51% chance of winning.
A title match with little separation
The Wuhan final on Sunday, October 18 gives Maja Chwalinska and Sonay Kartal a chance to finish the week as champion. Kartal's stronger record of holding serve on hard courts is the clearest practical separator, despite Chwalinska's much higher ranking. The margin is small. Both arrived at the final on five-match winning runs, so neither enters with a clear advantage in immediate results.
Chwalinska was ranked No. 22, while Kartal stood at No. 170, making their meeting a test of how much that ranking gap describes their current level. Their routes through Wuhan suggest a closer contest: Chwalinska beat Iga Swiatek in the semifinal, while Kartal eliminated Jelena Ostapenko. Those results brought both players through the same draw to the title match, but they do not establish which player's strengths transfer better to this opponent.
Service games held: where they stand

Each dot is one of the WTA top 100 with enough matches in the last 52 weeks. Maja Chwalinska is 42nd of 65; Sonay Kartal ranks ahead of 49 of 65.
| Player | Service games held | Place |
|---|---|---|
| Maja Chwalinska | 66.5% | 42nd of 65 |
| Sonay Kartal | 72.9% | Ahead of 49 of 65 |
| Field median | 69.3% | |
| Field best (Elena Rybakina) | 83.2% | 1st |
Kartal's service record is the clearest edge
Over the last year on hard courts, Kartal held 73% of her service games, compared with Chwalinska's 67%. That is the strongest reason to prefer Kartal in a matchup where recent winning runs offer little separation and the rankings point the other way. Holding matters here. A more dependable service record gives Kartal a plausible route to controlling her own games without needing to outperform Chwalinska on return throughout the match.
Chwalinska supplied the counterweight: she broke serve in 44% of return games, against Kartal's 41% over the same period. Those figures suggest the final's central test is whether Chwalinska can interrupt the service advantage that makes Kartal the narrow pick. They describe past results against different opponents, not a direct test between these finalists. Still, the contrast is specific: Kartal's advantage starts on serve, while Chwalinska's best answer starts on return.
Chwalinska has a stronger deciding-set record
A deciding set would put a different part of their records into focus, and that comparison favors Chwalinska rather than the model's narrow favorite. Chwalinska won 24 of 45 career deciding sets. Kartal won 12 of 29. Those career records do not determine a final, but they give a concrete reason to resist treating Kartal's service advantage as decisive if neither player can close the match early.
Recent form also leaves room for Chwalinska to reverse the forecast: she went 8-2 across her latest hard-court matches, while Kartal went 7-3. Chwalinska's return record gives her a way to turn that form into pressure on Kartal's service games. There is no direct precedent. They had never met, so neither player's broader record establishes how Chwalinska's left-handed game matches up against Kartal's right-handed game.
The prediction
Court Shark's model favors Kartal with a 51% win probability, while the market consensus gives her a slightly stronger 54% chance. Both make her a narrow favorite. The agreement is about direction, not a comfortable margin, and it leaves Chwalinska close enough that her return advantage could change the result.
Court Shark's AI analyst, which reads the matchup without the market, also picks Kartal, agreeing with the model. Her stronger service record supplies the clearest tennis reason for that choice, rather than her ranking or a superior recent winning run. The model's median total is 21 games, which describes the center of its match-length forecast rather than an exact score prediction.
The middle half of outcomes spans 18 to 27 games, and Kartal winning in straight sets is the model's likeliest individual result. Chwalinska's ability to break serve is the specific obstacle to that finish: Kartal's strongest statistical advantage has to survive against the better return record.

Methodology and sources
How we build model estimates and where our information comes from.
Model estimates and observed results
The win probabilities come from the Court Shark match model, trained on completed ATP and WTA matches. A probability says how often a player in this position wins, not that one result will happen. The model's number for a match is recorded before play and never changed afterwards, so it can be checked against the result.
Sources and citations
Results, scores, rankings and serve statistics come from the Court Shark match database. The market consensus is the pre-match price for each player converted to a probability. Figures in this article are a snapshot taken when it was written.
Limitations
Serve and return rates count only matches with full serve statistics, which are sparser for Challenger and lower-level events, and the tour average they are compared with covers every year on record. Head-to-head records count every meeting with a recorded winner, walkovers and retirements included. Charts and tables are a snapshot and do not update after publication.
